LIBRARY LOVERS SEEK LIMELIGHT

TREVOR PHILLIPS (Chair, Greater London Assembly) and TONY TRAVERS (Director, LSE Greater London Group)

will be supporting LIBRARIES FOR LIFE FOR LONDONERS, when it introduces itself to library policy makers, opinion formers and representative library users on Thursday 15 March at 7:30 pm in the House of Commons, Committee Room 9

LLL sees an effective public library service as a powerful weapon against social exclusion. We call for high quality and accessible libraries for all Londoners.

Libraries serve every section of the community and are cost effective. They are used by people of all ages, of all ethnic origins, and of all levels of education.

Libraries have an important role to play in lifelong learning, and in the drive for literacy. Sadly in the last 30 years funding has been constantly cut so that opening hours, bookstocks, staffing, and numbers of branches have all be reduced.

LLL asks for this deterioration to be reversed and for the Mayor and Greater London Authority and central government to take responsibility for the quality of London libraries.

Membership of LLL is open to all library user groups in London; and well will offer advice and support to people seeking to set up a group.

In the last year LLL has:

  • Made a written submission and given oral evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee inquiry into libraries
  • Set up a comprehensive website
  • Supported local user groups and people hoping to form new groups

Co-chairs: Susan Chinn (Haringey FORE), Kathleen Frenchman (Islington FOIL), Tom Selwyn (Camden PLUG)
Treasurer: Alan Templeton (CPLUG)
Secretary: Clair Drew (CPLUG)
