Friends Of Reading and Education - FORE! - is the umbrella organisation for library support groups in the London Borough of Haringey.
Formerly known as Haringey Library User Groups, it was founded in 1989 and was originally chaired by Margaret Bark. Eight years later, it was renamed, revamped and reactivated as a more campaigning organisation, with Mary Hoffman and Susan Chinn as co-chairs.
Because Haringey is an amalgamation of three
smaller boroughs (Hornsey, Wood Green and Tottenham), it has three
large libraries and six branch libraries. There are currently six active
user groups.
A further two groups - Hornsey
and Central - are "resting" and the interests
of one small branch library - Coombes Croft
- are covered by the St Ann's Library Campaign.
FORE! itself
meets bi-monthly - to discuss current local and national library issues,
to help new groups to form, and to hear reports from guest speakers (including
representatives of Haringey Council Library Service, local councillors
and union representatives). Each user group sends one or two members
to attend each meeting.
