LIBRARIAN-IN-CHARGE

Sylvester Ajogakue has been appointed Librarian-in-Charge at Highgate and Adam Wyman is Library Assistant. They have already come up with plenty of new ideas which they want to share with users.New labelling is already in place, some necessary weeding(to make room for all the new books!) is underway, and books will be sorted into categories again, so that those looking for the newest thriller or cookbook or travel guide -- will be able to go to a key spot at once to find it. Computer training has started too!

Sylvester wants everyone to know that income for the library is directly related to issues (books taken out), library membership, andour special needs. Percentageswhich are related to other libraries-- need to keep raising as they have been doing ever since we re-opened.Put the Action into your membership! We need all of you to tell everyone about the new opening hours and all the other things that are happeningand.....

WHAT CAN YOU DO??

***** PLEASE *****

TAKE OUT as many books as you can (8 at any one time on your ticket) and remember to RENEW BY PHONE as that will equal another issue of your book. Also, the more books that are taken out, the more room there is on the shelves.

BRING IN any books you think might be interesting this will boost our book stock at no cost!(And if it is a duplicate it will go into the HLAG booksale box.)

INTRODUCE FRIENDS and new neighbours to the library. We will soon have snazzy leaflets for you to pass out which will promote our hours, our stock, our special events.

REMEMBER BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES by donating a book to the library (with a special bookplate to go inside naming the special person honoured). This is a new idea for us which has been successful elsewhere, but is new to Haringey.

HLAG BUYS BOOKS

HLAG donated 500 worth of books to the library in June chosen carefully from reviews and recommendations of readers. Look for them on the shelves. We will continue to do this, so do not hesitate to ask for what you want!

The Junior Library has also benefited from HLAG funds, with a bumper crop of books from an bi-annual sale of review books by Armadillo editor Mary Hoffman. (Armadillo is a small magazine which offers excellent reviews of childrens books and is well worth subscribing to for only 7.50 per year.See SusanChinn for details and keep abreast of the newest and best in literature for children plus interviews and articles with and about your favourite authors.)

PLANS for STORYTELLING

Many mothers have requested a StoryTime for toddlers, and this will be started very soon.Sylvester and Adam would like to know what days and times you would prefer, and if anyone would like to take part on a regular or spasmodic basis !

The start of Storytime will be simple, and can develop as it goes along. It will be held in the turret corner keep watch for ;notices.

BOOKSALES RAISE PROFITS

The Walltop Booksale was held over the Bank Holiday and raised 35, but the stall at the Highgate Festival in Pond Square netted 177 in one sunny and busy afternoon. Thanks to all who took a turn behind the barricades.

An unexpected bonus to the day was being located under a shady tree and next to the Friends of Highgate Library in Chester Road (the Other Highgate Library). We enjoyed meeting them and hope to exchange news and visits in the future.

We have now recycled all those old left-over books (veterans of several years) to local charity shops and plan to START A NEW STOCK, so please think of us when clearing your shelves.

SNAGS SMOOTHED

All those nagging imperfections in our new-look library have been sanded over, varnished and rebuilt, so we now look nearly as wonderful as we should.

You may have noticed new notice boards, a working printer for the computers, new chairs and an extra table as well as a completely rebuilt librarians working space. And the front garden bench has been refinished and the plaque replaced.

Thanks to the snag-busters at Instant Library for this set of improvements.Still to come: video racks, coffee machine, OPAC computer for users to look up titles, authors etc.....any other wishes??

COMMITTEENEWS

New members Monica Williams and Isabel Stokes were welcomed to the last meeting of the HLAG committeeand were immediately involved in discussions about increasing use of the library and whether or not there is a Latin translation of the new Harry Potter (* yes! due in July) . We are glad to have their expertise in bookselling and librarianship on the committee.

Discussion on events for adults were shelved until the Autumn, but the suggestions were for a series of talks by local authors taking place from 7-8 on a Thursday.Any ideas??Do you have any friends who write and would like a chance to meet readers?? Let Sue or Sarah know.

The Centenary Projects -- the History of the Library and the Quilt are in the last stages of production.Watch for announcements.

MEMBERSHIP LAGS BEHIND

This year the membership figures have fallen behind the fine record of last year mainly because YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN to renew!! If this raises a guilty blush, solve the problem by sending your donationtoday (or bringing it in to the library when you take out your 8 books.)
