The Record of Friends of TSL
Since its creation in 1999 Friends of TSL has initiated a range of actions
and activities at the library.
We have promoted the renovation and refurbishment of this landmark library
(built in 1888 and one of the first public libraries in Lambeth)
This has included:
a new sign outside (funded by Friends)
a large mural in the childrens area and three large oil paintings in the reading room (secured through donations to Friends)
restoring the reading room to its former size and repainting it (funded by Friends, with work by students at Lambeth College)
repainting the lobby and the kitchen (funded by Friends, with work by students at Lambeth College)
rehabilitating the exterior (a Friends-proposed project, funded by LBL and with work by Lambeth College students)
renovating the derelict back yard and installing a small garden, creating Tradescants Retreat (funded by Friends and by a Ward Purse grant secured by Friends)
installing a film-showing facility (funded by a Ward Purse grant secured by Friends)
We have developed Tate Local, a new gallery space within the library, and
have run a continuous programme of exhibitions there since late 2000
These have included:
etchings by Paula Rego
paintings by Lilia Pegado, Geoff Routh, Aldous Eveleigh, Ian Montgomerie, David Western and May Anderson
Notting Hill Carnival costumes
artwork from local workshops for the over-50s and from Lambeth Mencap
artwork from local primary and secondary schools (ongoing)
Art workshops have also been run for classes from local primary schools, with a series of nine held in the two school years 2001/02 and 2002/03.
We have organised activities geared to enhancing the librarys links
to the local community
These include:
events directed at the large Portuguese population in Lambeth, with a week-long
Portuguese festival, a talk and exhibition on Portugals leading 19th
century novelist, readings of Portuguese poetry, and a Portuguese wine-tasting
session. Friends also secured donations of Portuguese-language books from
the education section of the Portuguese consulate and of English translations
of Portuguese titles from a Gulbenkian-funded arts charity
retelling local memories of the 1930s and 1940s
talks on famous local people ( illustrator Arthur Rackham, gardening pioneers the John Tradescants, poet Drummond Allison the latter two in cooperation with Lambeth Libraries in the May literary festivals and on locating the grave of William Blake, in cooperation with the Blake Society)
a performance of poetry and music to celebrate Black History Month (in cooperation with the library service)

poetry workshops for both adults and teenagers
two local archaeology workshops
celebrations of Bloomsday, St Georges Day, Burns Night, the Portuguese national day and International Womens Day
hosting the launch event for the Stockwell Festivals in 2001-2005.
and staging exhibitions and talks as part of the Vauxhall Festival in 2001-03
Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library have:
promoted a programme of renovation and refurbishment of this landmark library
(built in 1888 and one of the first public libraries in Lambeth) which has
included a new sign outside, the restoration of the reading room to its former
dimensions, and - with the participation of students at Lambeth College -
the repainting of the reading room, the lobby and the kitchen, and the renovation
of the exterior. Friends also obtained a grant for the redevelopment of the
derelict rear yard as a paved courtyard and small garden. Donations or loans
of artwork have been obtained for the librarys walls.
Developed Tate Local, a new gallery space within the library, and run a series
of exhibitions there, including etchings by Paula Rego, paintings by Lilia
Pegado, Notting Hill Carnival costumes, artwork by the over-50s and by local
primary and secondary schools, and works by local artists. Art workshops
have also been run for classes from local primary schools.
Enhanced the librarys links to the local community, in particular
the large Portuguese population in Lambeth, through staging events, including
a Portuguese festival, a retelling of local memories of the 1930s and 1940s,
a performance of poetry and music to celebrate Black History Month (in cooperation
with the library service), a talk and exhibition on Portugals leading
19th century novelist, an Afro-Brazilian music and drumming workshop for
local children, poetry workshops, readings of Portuguese poetry, a Portuguese
wine-tasting session, and celebrations of Bloomsday, St Georges Day,
Burns Night and the Portuguese national day. Friends also coordinated the
launch receptions, at the library, for the Stockwell Festivals in 2001-2005.
Served as a channel for communication and consultation with the librarys
management and staff, via quarterly meetings between the manager and the
committee and ad hoc meetings with Lambeth Libraries officers. In May-June
2001 Friends carried out an extensive opinion survey in the librarys
catchment area.
What have we done?
fought to save the library from closure in 2000
campaigned and raised resources for the librarys refurbishment, both
interior and exterior
developed Tate Local, a new gallery space within the library, and run exhibitions

Tradescants, Alexander technique, and Portuguese literature; Portuguese wine
and food tastings; celebrations of Bloomsday, St Georges Day, Burns
Night and Portugals national day: and music and poetry launches for
